Three men laughed and jeered as another sexually assaulted and punched a woman walking home from work in Melbourne's CBD.

The 20-year-old woman, known as 'Addy', was attacked just before midnight on March 10 at the entrance to Eagle Alley, a laneway off Latrobe Street.

Addy says she didn't hear them over the loud music in her headphones until they grabbed her from behind.

She was sexually assaulted as three men hurled verbal abuse at her and cheered on her attacker.

Addy was punched in the face as she pulled away, but fought back, punching the man before running into a nearby park.

"My first instinct was to defend myself and then flee," she told reporters on Thursday.

"It's inexcusable behaviour; there was four of them and one of me."

Police say her dress was torn and she suffered a black eye and lacerations in the attack.

Addy no longer makes that 15 minute walk home, instead opting for a taxi, and her colleagues have started to do the same.

The four men are described as Caucasian, in their early to mid-30s and wearing dress shirts and jeans.
