Police investigate man in boot in Sydney

A post mortem will be carried out on Monday to determine how the man found dead in a car boot in Sydney's west on Sunday, died.

Students at the TAFE and university near where a man's body was found in a car boot in Sydney's west may hold the key to the investigation, police say.

The gruesome discovery was made on Sunday morning when officers responded to reports of an abandoned vehicle near Rookwood Cemetery.

A post mortem will be carried out on Monday to determine how the man died.

Residents say the green Honda Accord had been parked on East Street in Lidcombe for about two weeks.

Police are appealing for information from the public.

"There's a major university and TAFE up the road here," Inspector Paul Arnold told reporters.

"No doubt students, teachers and other personnel may have travelled along this road and noticed this car."

Local resident Kunasingham Sivakumar, 51, said the car was in a parking lane near a TAFE site.

"It came to my notice because it had a silver thing attached to the bumper bar," he told AAP.

"I thought it was maybe a student's car from TAFE because people always park there."

The car had what looked like silver foil or gaffer tape on the corners of the bumper.
