Investigations are continuing into the death of a "gorgeous" little girl found dead in the bathtub of a southwest Sydney home.

Crime scene investigators remained at the house in Miller, near Liverpool, late into Tuesday night as they tried to piece together the circumstances surrounding the two-year-old's death.

A post-mortem examination will determine how the girl died, and its results determine the direction of further inquiries, police say.

The two-year-old was found dead just after midday on Tuesday, while the toddler's single mother recovered in hospital from a car crash at the weekend, a neighbour said.

Police made the grisly discovery at the Merino Street property after a family friend raised concerns about the girl's welfare.

"We had someone come to us asking if we know where the girl is, some friend came up to us in the morning before the police came," the neighbour said.

Shannon Francisco, whose in-laws live across the road, said: "The little girl was gorgeous ... dark curly hair, she was just gorgeous."

He said he'd never seen any trouble in the street.

"That's why it's a big surprise for me," he told reporters at the scene.

Police blocked the street on Tuesday as they spoke with neighbours, while forensic officers examined the house, which was declared a crime scene.

Detectives are also expected to speak with the girl's relatives in a bid to determine the chain of events leading to her death.
