There are reports that a body wrapped in a blue tarpaulin, spotted off a Sydney beach, could be that of missing man Jamie Gao. The body was spotted in the ocean off Shelly Beach at Cronulla about 7.30 this morning (AEST).
Jamie Gao, from Hurstville, was seen at about 1.40pm last Tuesday getting into a white car on Arab Road in Padstow.
Detectives have been told Mr Gao was seen speaking to two men, both described as being of Asian appearance, shortly before he got into the car.
The University of Technology Sydney student had been excited about a "secret meeting" with the men in the days beforehand.
Detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad have arrested and charged a 55-year-old Cronulla man charged with murder and large commercial drug supply.
He was refused bail to appear in Kogarah Local Court today.
Police have also searched the man’s Cronulla home, seizing a blue Ford Falcon XR6 and a number of other items of interest to investigators.
Further searches resulted in the seizure of a silver Ford Falcon motor vehicle, a boat and a white Ford Falcon, believed to be the vehicle Mr Gao got into on Arab Road last Tuesday.
The Commander of the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, Detective Superintendent Luke Moore, said investigations had led officers to conclude that Mr Gao has been murdered.
“While we have charged a man with murder, this investigation will continue and we may make further arrests," he said.
Det Sup Moore said Mr Gao's mother, who runs a small business, was overseas on holiday at the time of the abduction. She has since returned to Australia.
Officers are also reportedly searching for Roger Rogerson. It is believed police want to question the disgraced former detective about the student's disappearance. Mr Rogerson has denied any involvement in the disappearance of Jamie Gao.
