Police are waiting to question a seriously injured man who walked into a Sydney police station with a stab wound to his chest and alerted them to the death of a woman on the NSW South Coast.

The heavily bleeding man staggered out of his car and walked into Gladesville police station at 5.30am (AEDT) on Friday to tell them a woman - believed to be his sister - was dead in a Wollongong home 70 kilometres away.

Half an hour later, the 52-year-old woman's body was discovered at Bulli by local police officers.

A murder investigation has been launched, with police also investigating whether the man may have stabbed himself in the chest.

Detective Inspector Darren Kelly told AAP police were looking into whether the man had recently left a mental health facility.

He remains in the Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition and under police guard.

But officers may not be able to question him until Saturday, depending on how his condition progresses, Det Insp Kelly said.

The woman has yet to be formally identified and although police have said there was a relationship between the pair, they have not confirmed she was his sister.

Police would also not speculate on reports that the woman was stabbed.

Crime scenes have been established at Bulli and outside Gladesville police station, where the man parked his car.
