Policeman charged over Sydney robbery

A suspended police officer is one of three men charged over an attempted robbery in Sydney's west.

A suspended police officer has been charged, along with two others, over an attempted robbery outside a money transfer business in Sydney's west.

Heavily-armed police stopped the three men, all aged 29, in front of hundreds of onlookers.

The daylight robbers appeared to be wearing tradesmen outfits when they were arrested in the middle of a street in Cabramatta on Monday.

The men were caught on John Street just after 10.30am outside a money transfer business called Vina.

The arrested policeman was a senior constable attached to the South West Metropolitan Region.

He has been suspended without pay.

Witnesses say members of the specialist unit, who were wearing combat gear, helmets and carrying large guns, wrestled the men to the ground.

One man was reportedly wearing a wig and carrying a walkie-talkie.

The offence did not involve firearms, police said.

The men face charges of armed robbery and three counts of stealing.

They have been refused bail and will appear before Liverpool Local Court on Tuesday.
