A police officer has been hit by a car while trying to make an arrest in the NSW southern highlands.

A policeman has been hit by a car while trying to make an arrest in NSW's southern highlands.

The senior constable was struck by the vehicle at about 6.30pm on Thursday, as he ran across Gibson Street in Goulburn to help a colleague arrest an offender.

He suffered head injuries and suspected broken bones and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The female driver of the car returned a negative breath test at the scene and was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Police were unable to give further details about the arrest which was underway when the incident occured.
