Policeman stabbed in country Vic melee

A plain-clothes policeman has been stabbed in an altercation in the car park of a fast food restaurant in Ballarat.

A man and a teenage girl have been charged over the stabbing of a plain clothes police officer west of Melbourne.

Police say the male officer was injured as he sought to intervene in a scuffle between a fellow officer and two people at Ballarat on Thursday night.

The plain-clothes officer was stabbed in the face and leg, and went to hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old Wendouree girl and a 21-year-old Ballarat man and charged them both over the incident on Friday.

The girl has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, assaulting police, assault with a weapon, affray and breaching bail conditions.

The man has been charged with two counts of assaulting police and will face Ballarat Magistrates Court later on Friday.
