Prime Minister Tony Abbott has joined his political colleagues in signing a condolence book for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Speaker Bronwyn Bishop read a letter of condolence from the Prime Minister to those gathered in Parliament House’s Marble Foyer, where the book will remain for public signatures for one week.

Ambassdors from affected countries looked on as Ms Bishop spoke.

“There were 298 people on this aircraft and their deaths offend our sense of justice,” she read.

“We grieve for all, but particularly the 37 men, women and children who called Australia home... Our hearts go out to their families.

"We will support them through difficult times ahead. In coming weeks, Australians will stand with their families, friends, neighbours and colleagues who have lost people they cherish. 23 million Australians share the sadness of those who mourn.

"We are united in grief and our determination to ensure that justice is done."

Ms Bishop also signed the book, alongside Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and cabinet ministers.
