Australian Facebook users posted most this year about politics, sport, and Princess Kate.

The world's largest social network released its list of Australia's 10 top-trending topics on Monday.

Unsurprisingly in an election year, "vote" secured first place and "election" placed sixth.

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd was fourth, five spots ahead of the man who replaced him, current prime minister Tony Abbott.

But even amid the political carnage, Australians still found time to post about sport.

"Cricket" was the third most-featured topic, with "Grand Final" fifth and "Lions" - referring to the British and Irish Lions - placing eighth.

Princess Kate beat all three, however, securing second spot after the July birth of the royal baby, Prince George of Cambridge.

Rounding out the list in tenth spot was TV show Big Brother.

Facebook, which claims to have 12 million monthly and nine million daily Australian users, measured how many posts mentioned a specific subject and ranked them accordingly.

Globally, "Pope Francis" was the top-trending topic, followed by "Election", "Royal Baby", "Typhoon", and "Margaret Thatcher".

Nelson Mandela, who died last week, was tenth.
