Poll fails to deliver sustained optimism

Demand for credit by business proved unusually subdued in the wake of the July 2 federal election, a time when there is normally a burst of optimism.

New figures suggest any post-election optimism felt in the business community was short-lived.

Demand for loans by business is usually a good indicator of confidence, but new data shows credit growth has tailed off in recent months.

Applications for credit rose by a modest 1.8 per cent in the September quarter compared to a year earlier, according to credit data provider Veda.

"In most election years, we see a significant boost in business credit demand shortly after a newly elected government has been established," Neil Shilbury, a general manager at Veda said on Wednesday.

He said while the quarter started strongly in the immediate wake of the July 2 election, the boost was short-lived with demand easing throughout August and September.

Monthly business confidence figures for September released on Tuesday also suggested the interest rate cut in August had a limited impact.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer confidence index for October is released on Wednesday.

In September it increased by a limp 0.3 per cent.

The weekly gauge of consumer confidence produced by ANZ and Roy Morgan has been fairly volatile in recent weeks, but the latest result released on Tuesday showed some stability, easing by just 0.3 per cent.
