Just one in three voters want Tony Abbott to stay on as prime minister but even with Malcolm Turnbull as leader the coalition would still trail Labor at an election, a new poll shows.
The Galaxy poll found 55 per cent of voters thought Mr Abbott should stand down and only 35 per cent believed he should stay on, with 10 per cent undecided.
The poll, published by News Corp Australia on Sunday, indicated that if Mr Turnbull was prime minister he would save the Liberal Party seats, delivering a two-party preferred split of 51 per cent for Labor versus 49 per cent for the coalition.
When asked if they expected Mr Abbott to lead the party to the next election, 63 per cent of voters polled said they did not expect he would still be leader.
The poll showed that Mr Turnbull as prime minister would lift the coalition's primary vote from 36 to 42 per cent.
When asked how they would vote if Julie Bishop was leader, the coalition's primary vote increased to 39 per cent.
