Polls have opened for Fijis first elections since the coup in 2006.

Polls have opened for Fiji's first elections since the coup in 2006 that saw former rear admiral appoint himself as prime minister of Australias Pacific neighbour.

The question now is will he be able to get enough votes to transition from authoritarian ruler to the democratically elected leader of the country.

There's a lot riding on the outcome after eight years of rule by decree.

SBS correspondent Stefan Armbruster has been out at polling booths in Suva.

He's speaking with Kristina Kukolja.
