Pope honoured in home town stadium

Argentinian club San Lorenzo are to name their new stadium in honour of the Pope, who is their most famous fan.

Argentinian club San Lorenzo will name their new stadium after their most famous fan: Pope Francis.

The new stadium will be built on land seized from the club during the 1976-83 military dictatorship.

The Argentina-born Pope has long followed the Saints of San Lorenzo, one of the oldest teams in the Argentina Football Association.

Some joke that the Pope has been intervening, and the club have been getting some help from above.

Since he became Pope in March 2013, San Lorenzo have won a local title as well as the South American Copa Libertadores club competition for the first time in their history.

Club officials have twice travelled to The Vatican with their trophies to thank the Pope.

San Lorenzo announced the decision on Wednesday on their official Twitter account.
