Port captain ready for AFL pitch to Ryder

Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak says his AFL club is an attractive destination for potential recruit Paddy Ryder, who has walked out of Essendon.

Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak will offer his services to try and convince disgruntled ruckman Paddy Ryder to join the AFL club.

Ryder has walked out of Essendon, with Port among a batch of clubs now seeking to recruit the 26-year-old.

Boak says Port, who were beaten by Hawthorn by three points in Saturday's preliminary final, are an attractive destination for Ryder.

"We're in a great position as a club. We think we have got a great list and we're certainly on the track of building something pretty special," Boak told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.

"It's a great family and a great tightknit group."

Boak said he and other Port players were prepared to make a pitch to Ryder.

"List management will take care of that but if we need to get involved, then we will," he said.

Boak tipped Sydney to win the premiership - but only just.

"It's going to be a fantastic game ... Sydney are just packed with stars and that forward line is pretty potent, but you can't write off Hawthorn with the quality they have got and their experience," he said.

"It will be pretty hard to watch knowing how close we got."

The Power skipper was slowly coming to terms with Port's near-miss in the preliminary final.

"The guys were pretty shattered. It still hurts," he said.

"And that is really what is going to motivate us over the pre-season and next year because it's a tough feeling.

"The side we have is quality. I think we showed that we can match it with the best.

"There were certain areas that didn't work for us on the day and I guess if you kick 3.9 in the first quarter, that is pretty tough and you can't do that against a quality side in a preliminary final.

"We have definitely got the right side but we need to go to another level again."
