Port Adelaide assistant coach Nathan Bassett is lamenting his AFL club's missed opportunities in a narrow loss to Richmond.

But Bassett says the seven-point loss to the Tigers at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night should be a valuable learning tool for the Power.

"We're trying to educate our players further, away from the emotion of the result," he told reporters on Monday.

"Its always frustrating and disappointing when you have had a loss, particularly one where you had your chances and you didn't play the way you have liked."

Bassett pinpointed Port's lack of ability to break even in aerial duels in attack late the game as a key factor in his club's second loss of the season.

"The first three quarters it was pretty good, the last quarter we struggled in that space," he said.

"We had good opportunities to bring the ball to ground and we were in the contest and we weren't strong enough in the contest.

"So we either improve in that space or we find other people that will improve us."

Instant improvement in that facet will be vital when the Power travel to play West Coast this Friday night given the Eagles' defence is renowned for its intercept marking.

"West Coast are the premiership side and their crowd is pretty loud and they tend to not lose very often over there," Bassett said.

"It makes it a tough trip. But common sense doesn't always equate to how you perform."
