Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray has shunned free agency with a three-year deal and is likely to end his AFL career as a one-club player.

The contract extension will take Gray through to the end of the 2018 season, when he will be 30.

It comes after a career-best season for the midfielder and forward, who made the All-Australian team for the first time and also won Port's best and fairest award.

The 26-year-old played 25 games and kicked 42 goals this year as the Power went within three points of upsetting eventual premiers Hawthorn in their preliminary final.

"Obviously it's nice to find some consistency with my own form but what I really enjoyed was the way the whole team played this year," Gray said.

"But we're not satisfied with where we're at. We're going to attack this pre-season harder than ever to take our game to another level."

Gray has played 115 games and kicked 161 goals since his 2007 debut.

Coach Ken Hinkley said Gray had helped set the standard for the team.

"Robbie's year really was outstanding and it reflected the growth in the whole group of which he is clearly a vital member," Hinkley said.
