Port will embrace pressure, says Hinkley

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has told his team to embrace the pressure on them to beat Adelaide.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has told his players to embrace the added pressure of favouritism for their AFL grudge match against Adelaide on Sunday.

But Hinkley says a Port win won't be any sweeter because it will formally end Adelaide's finals hopes.

The Crows enter the AAMI Stadium clash with seven wins - three victories behind eighth-placed Port - and their coach Brenton Sanderson says they need to win all five remaining games to have a chance at making the finals.

But Hinkley says killing off Adelaide's season isn't motivation for Port.

"It would feel good that we win, that is about all," Hinkley told reporters on Friday.

Port haven't carried favouritism into a clash of the South Australian clubs, dubbed the Showdown, for at least three seasons.

But Hinkley, in his first year as coach, has Port on the cusp of returning to the finals for the first time since 2007.

"The expectation is something you actually have to live it and feel the pressure of it - and you then have got to be able to handle it," he said.

"The good sides actually come through it and they do handle it.

"We are a very young side ... we have actually got to experience all these opportunities and grow from them."

Sunday's fixture is a sell-out and will be the last between the clubs at AAMI Stadium, with AFL games to be moved to a redeveloped Adelaide Oval from next year.

"It's going to be as close as you can get to a finals-type atmosphere," Sanderson told reporters on Friday.

"And it's very special for the South Australian football purist because it's the last time you will see a Showdown at AAMI Stadium ... it's going to be on.

"The Showdowns mean something more - this is extra anxiety, this is extra pressure.

"We put a lot of expectations on ourselves internally to play well in these games and I know Port Adelaide do the same ... the last Showdown at this stadium should be a cracker."
