Porte second overall in Dauphine

Richie Porte of Australia is second overall in the Criterium du Dauphine after Chris Froome seized the lead from overnight leader Alberto Contador.

Australia's Richie Porte says he's in good form for the Tour de France starting on July 2 after moving into second overall in the warm-up Criterium du Dauphine.

The BMC Racing Team rider finished one second behind two-time Tour champion Chris Froome who seized the lead after winning the fifth stage on Friday.

Froome attacked with about 2.5km left and his former teammate Porte was the only one able to follow the pace on the final climb.

Overnight leader Alberto Contador crossed in fifth, and dropped to third overall, 27 seconds back. Porte moved from third to second place overall, seven seconds behind Froome.

"I didn't expect to gain time on Alberto Contador on such a short climb," Froome said.

"There's still a hard stage to come tomorrow, so I haven't won the Dauphine yet."

Porte said Contador did not have a good day but there were still two days to go.

"The team was really good around me today so I'm happy with how things are. To be honest it was probably better than expected. It was a really hard day. Today showed that I'm in a good place."

"I knew it was hard from six to two kilometres but when Froomey attacked like that and you see guys crack, it gives you a bit more inspiration to keep pushing on," Porte said.

"Both Froomey and I are in good form for July, we're both going so well. It's a little bit different to be riding for yourself and I'm quite enjoying it."

BMC Racing Team sports director Valerio Piva said Porte was strong and so was the team around him.

"It was the first of three important uphill finishes so to see Richie take second place, it's a good result.

"It was a very hard day and very fast, and there were a lot of attacks throughout the stage.
