A third placing in the tough time-trial stage in the mountains at the Tour of Romandie has moved Richie Porte into contention for general classification honours.

BMC Racing's Australian star Porte finished just 18 seconds behind stage three winner Egan Bernal, who clocked a time of 25 min 10sec.

Overall race leader Primoz Roglic was second on Friday and has a six second advantage over Colombian Bernal and 27 seconds over Porte.

The 21-year-old Team Sky rider Bernal was four seconds faster than Roglic of LottoNL-Jumbo over the 9.9km route between the ski stations of Ollon and Villars.

Defending champion Porte heads a strong Australian contingent at the six-day Swiss race with Rohan Dennis finishing seventh in the time trial to be sixth overall.

On Saturday, the race's most demanding stage could well decide the final result and features three category 1 climbs in a 149km trek that starts and finishes in Sion.

The race will conclude on Sunday.
