Porter puts elder abuse in spotlight

The federal attorney-general will push for new measures to stamp out elder abuse at a meeting with his state and territory counterparts.

Federal Attorney-General Christian Porter has vowed to push for new measures that crack down on elder abuse when he meets his state and territory counterparts in Perth.

Mr Porter says there is broad agreement from the private sector and groups representing elderly people that a single public register of powers of attorney is "highly desirable".

"I will be pushing that position strongly at tomorrow's meeting of the Council of Attorneys-General," he said on Thursday.

The banking industry and Council of the Ageing and National Seniors Australia have called for power-of-attorney orders to be in a national online register.

The federal government announced funding for a national online register in this year's budget.

Council of the Ageing and National Seniors Australia chief Ian Yates said state and federal governments needed to do more to address adult children's impatience to get their hands on inheritances.

"The situation as it stands is completely unacceptable and we need to do much more to actively prevent financial abuse of older Australians from occurring," Mr Yates said.

Australian Banking Association chief executive Anna Bligh said governments needed to act to address the growing problem.

"Elder financial abuse can be reported to police directly. However, it's often hard as those involved are often close family and friends," she said.
