Port's Marshall to return to action

Port Adelaide's Todd Marshall will return to football this weekend after taking compassionate leave from his AFL club following the death of his dad.

Emerging Port Adelaide forward Todd Marshall is returning to action after taking more than a month's leave from his AFL club following the death of his father.

Marshall, 19, will play for Port's SANFL side on Saturday - his first competitive match since an AFL game on April 15.

The New South Welshman's father died last month and his mother died last October.

Marshall's teammate Tom Rockliff says Port's playing group has offered whatever support they can to the promising key forward.

"It's the most challenging thing that most people go through, losing a parent, and Todd has had a horrendous six months losing both," Rockliff told reporters on Friday.

"He is in pretty good spirits.

"Being at a footy club is the best environment for him ... the most important thing for Todd is his time schedule and we are just here to support him and help him any way we can."

Port's AFL players are about to enjoy a weekend off following their trip to China, where they beat Gold Coast in Shanghai last weekend.

"It is a bit of a trek over there ... but there are plenty of teams that do it worldwide," he said.

"You are a professional athlete and the expectation would be you get yourself ready to play.

"If we had to come back and play (this weekend), that would be fine but the AFL has looked after us, giving us the weekend off.

"It is a good chance for us to re-set."

Port take a six-three win-loss record into their bye.
