Pospisil loses Chennai tennis first round

Seventh seed Vasek Pospisil has lost in the Chennai Open first round, but No.5 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and No.6 Gilles Muller have won three-setters.

Vasek Pospisil of Canada is the only seed not to reach the Chennai Open second round after losing in straight sets to Britain's Aljaz Bedene.

Pospisil, seeded seventh, beat Bedene just over two months ago indoors in Valencia, but the closely ranked pair virtually went point for point on Tuesday outdoors in Chennai. Bedene earned the only break to triumph 7-5 7-6 (8-6).

He was runner-up in Chennai last year as a Slovene, and returned as a Brit after becoming a citizen last March.

The other two seeds in action, Spanish No.5 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and No.6 Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, won three-setters.

Russian teen Andrey Rublev, a wildcard, beat local qualifier Somdev Devvarman 6-3 3-6 6-3 for a shot at two-time defending champion Stan Wawrinka. Also the top seed, Wawrinka is aiming for a fourth Chennai title.

The 248th-ranked wildcard Ramkumar Ramanathan, who beat Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2 6-0 for his second career win on the ATP Tour, set up a clash with second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
