Potter delighted by Burgess twins progress

Mick Potter saw first hand the raw talent of the Burgess twins George and Thomas at Bradford and his Wests Tigers side must stop them on Friday.

Mick Potter isn't surprised George and Thomas Burgess are playing in the NRL for high-flying South Sydney but the Wests Tigers coach admits he never thought his former Bradford charges would scale such heights so quickly.

Potter was in charge of the English Super League side when the youngest members of the Burgess clan were making their way in the junior ranks before linking up with older brothers Luke and Sam who were already at Souths.

The quartet will create history on Friday when they all play against the Tigers at Allianz Stadium - the first time in NRL history four siblings have featured in the same team.

Like most people who clap eyes on George and Thomas for the first time, Potter remembers being shocked at the sheer size of the identical twins and being unable to tell them apart.

Thomas tips the scales at 117kg and is 196cm tall with George weighing 120kg and measuring 194cm.

But seeing them wreak havoc in the NRL is less of surprise for Potter who paid tribute to the Souths coaching staff for nurturing their potential.

"You could see their raw talent and they always wanted to try and improve. They knew they had to learn the game," he said of their time at the Bulls.

"They were potentially awesome athletes, depending on what sport they chose as they could have chosen a lot of different sports.

"They've benefited from having a couple of pre-seasons and getting some good coaching in building up their strength and their agility and football nous.

"And you can see the fruits of their labour. You can see why they are going so well, they are pretty hard to hold back."

Unlike Sam, who is as adept at prop or in the back row, marking him out as one of the best forwards in the world, Potter said the twins had no desire to play anywhere else but the coal face that is the front row.

"I always thought if they wanted to be top front-rowers it was only their mentality that was going to hold them back or take them forward," Potter said.

"Luckily for us they both chose rugby league, but unluckier for us is that we have to play against Souths on Friday."
