Power on pole for IndyCar Portland return

Will Power has given his Indycar championship hopes a boost by grabbing pole position for the Grand Prix of Portland, the second last race of the season.

Will Power is clinging to a spot in the championship race and the Indianapolis 500 winner will start from the pole in IndyCar's return to Portland International Raceway.

Australian Power won the 54th pole of his career and fourth of the season.

The Team Penske driver is coming off a victory last weekend on an oval track and a victory on Sunday on the permanent road course would ensure he's got a shot at winning his second IndyCar title.

Scott Dixon, the four-time IndyCar champion, holds a 26-point lead over Alexander Rossi with third-placed Power and defending series champion Josef Newgarden both mathematically eligible to win the title with two races remaining.

Newgarden qualified second for a Team Penske front row pair of Chevrolets.

Rossi was third fastest, Sebastian Bourdais, the last winner in Portland 11 years ago, will start from fourth spot on the grid while New Zealander Dixon struggled in qualifying and was 11th.
