Power restored in Melbourne after crash

Electricity has been restored in Melbourne after more than 10,000 customers, including the costumed cast of Opera Australia, were left in the dark.

Power has been restored for more than 10,000 Melburnians after a truck crashed into an electricity pole causing widespread blackouts in Southbank and South Melbourne.

A Citipower spokesman says thousands of customers, including the Coroners Court of Victoria, several office buildings and cafes lost power just before 11am on Tuesday.

Workers, including the cast of Opera Australia dressed in full costume, stood out on the streets as police directed cars through defunct traffic lights until power was restored.

VicRoads said the blackout was caused when a truck hit a power pole and became wedged under a bridge.
