Power restored to thousands of NSW homes

More than 700 calls have been received by the SES as strong winds and rain hammered parts of Sydney and southern NSW, cutting power to thousands of homes.

Foul weather continues to hammer Sydney and southern NSW, with thousands of homes losing power and the State Emergency Services (SES) receiving more than 700 calls for assistance.

"Damaging winds around 65km/h with peak gusts of 90km/h are forecast for parts of the (Sydney), Hunter and Illawarra forecast districts," the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said in its latest severe weather warning.

"Winds in (Sydney) and in Illawarra are expected to ease Monday evening."

The SES has 325 volunteers out helping those affected by the winds and rain.

The strongest gust - 91km/h - was recorded at Lucas Heights.

"The majority of the calls received by the SES are for leaking roofs or for fallen trees and branches," the SES said Monday evening.

About 6000 homes and businesses which lost power were by 6.40pm (AEST) reconnected, an Ausgrid spokeswoman told AAP.

Road closures are in place across Sydney and the state's south and the Illawarra Highway remains shut at Albion Park.

Earlier on Monday a large tree crashed onto a classroom roof at Darlinghurst Public School in Potts Point.

No one was hurt.

Waves of up to eight metres were hitting Batemans Bay on the state's south coast on Monday and swells up to five metres are expected along Sydney's beaches Tuesday.

The damaging winds also caused disruptions for passengers at Sydney Airport with some delayed for up to an hour.

The complex low pressure system causing the bad weather is expected to shift away from the NSW Central Coast on Tuesday, the BOM said.
