Powerball - $80m up for grabs on Thursday

Powerball's $80 million Thursday night draw rounds out a record-breaking week in Australian lottery history.

One lucky Australian could be a multimillionaire overnight, with Thursday's Powerball set at a whopping $80 million.

It's the equal largest division one prize in Powerball's 22-year-history and if one person wins it will set an Australian record for the single biggest lottery win.

The last time $80 million was on the table was back in 2009, while the single largest Powerball prize of $70 million went to a Hervey Bay couple in 2016.

Thursday night's draw closely follows Oz Lotto's $70 million top prize split between two winners from Victoria and NSW in what has been described as an unusually grand week for jackpots.

"This week is a record for Australian lottery to have Australia's two jackpotting games Oz Lotto and Powerball both at this high level within just days of each other," The Lot spokesman Matt Hart told AAP.
