A pregnant Greens senator has hit out at John Howard's comments that women's caring duties limited their capacity and as a result he doubted there will ever be a gender balanced parliament.

Larissa Waters said the former prime minister's remarks were out of touch and men needed to step up and do more work in the home.

"I'm about to have my second child. I have a few months to go yet. I wasn't probably meant to announce that on national television anyway, but I feel perfectly able to continue in my role," the Greens co-deputy leader told ABC TV.
