A heavily pregnant refugee being held in immigration detention on Nauru has been evacuated to Australia for medical treatment.

Nauruan officials received confirmation from Australia on Thursday night that the woman would be airlifted out, with the transfer taking place on Friday afternoon.

"We wish mum and bub the very best," the Nauruan government tweeted on Friday.

The Kuwati woman is reportedly 37 weeks pregnant, with her baby in breech, a tumour on the wall of her uterus and a history of miscarriage.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton this week was urged to bring the woman to Australia.
