Prima breast cancer drug safe

Biotech Prima Biomed says its lead compound, IMP321, has proven to be safe and effective in the early stages of a trial to treat breast cancer patients.

Shares in Prima Biomed have climbed more than 12 per cent after the biotech reported that its lead compound, called IMP321, has been shown to be safe and effective in the early stages of a clinical trial to treat patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Prima Biomed on Monday said IMP321, used in combination with the chemotherapy paclitaxel, was shown to be safe and well tolerated by all 15 patients involved in the safety run-in stage of Prima's Phase II trial.

The treatment also showed encouraging signs of controlling the disease in 13 patients.

The safety run-in stage of the trial involved giving patients 6mg and 30mg doses of IMP321, with the higher dose demonstrating a stronger immune response.

Prima chief medical officer Dr Frederic Triebel said the positive data from the safety run-in stage represented a major milestone for the Phase II trial.

Prima presented its findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Shares in Prima were 0.6 cents, or 19.35 per cent, higher at 3.7 cents at 1223 AEST.
