Primary Health Care founder dies

The founder and former chief executive of medical centre operator Primary Health Care, Edmund Bateman, has died.

The man who transformed a Sydney GP clinic into one of Australia's largest health care providers, Edmund Bateman, has died.

Dr Bateman expanded his own general practice in Brookvale into Primary Health Care's first medical centre in 1985, and led the company for almost 30 years as it grew to more than 70 centres.

Primary Health Care also has pathology, medical technology and health insurance operations.

He stood down as managing director and chief executive in January after battling illness since late 2014.

Primary Health Care said Dr Bateman passed away peacefully on Sunday.

"Dr Bateman will be missed by all," the company said.

"His legacy and impact on the Australian healthcare system will continue to be felt for years to come."

Dr Bateman was also a key figure in the agriculture industry, owning about 12,140 hectares of property with his wife Belinda, running commercial and stud cattle.

The 73-year-old is survived by his wife, four children and 15 grandchildren.
