The Minnesota judge overseeing Prince's estate is keeping cameras out of an upcoming hearing that could delve into claims about possible heirs to the late musician.
Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide said on Wednesday that reporters won't be allowed to use audio or video recording devices.
The judge also said he may bar the media and the public from parts of the hearing if he has to address paternity questions involving specific people.
Eide said Minnesota courts are usually open to the public, but that laws and court rules say paternity proceedings and records are generally closed.
Prince died in April.
No will has yet to emerge for his estate, estimated to be worth as much as $US300 million ($A402 million).
Several news organisations plan to challenge the media restrictions.
