Victorians are being assured there will be a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding a violent prison riot that ended early this morning.

All of Victoria's prisons remain in indefinite lockdown to prevent any further outbreaks, and criminal charges will be laid against the inmates involved.

The riot is believed to have been triggered by anger over the start of a statewide smoking ban in jails.

But authorities say they are determined there will be no backdown on the ban.
