Australian actor, Prisoner and All Saints star Judith McGrath, has died at the age of 70.

Australian actor Judith McGrath, who starred in some of the country's best loved television shows, has died aged 70.

McGrath appeared as prison officer Colleen Powell in Prisoner and nurse Von Ryan in All Saints.

She also appeared in Neighbours, A Country Practice and Winners and Losers during her long career.

Winners and Losers star Virginia Gay paid tribute to her former co-star on Twitter.

"No! OH, wonderful, dry, sharp as a tack, Jude! Thank you for everything, Jude. What a bloody privilege," she said.

Ms McGrath joined the cast of Prisoner as Colin Powell in 1979, but started as a background character. She was eventually thrust into the limelight and developed into one of the more popular characters from the iconic show.

She played officer Powell, dubbed 'Po-face' by the prisoners, for 253 episodes.

From Prisoner, she moved onto projects such as Neighbours, Round the Twist and A Country Practice.

The veteran actress then played Yvonne 'Von' Ryan in the Australian drama All Saints from 1998 to 2009.
