Prisoners charged over Tas hostage crisis

Two inmates at Hobart's Risdon Prison have been charged over an incident where they took a guard hostage.

Two inmates at a maximum security jail in Tasmania have been arrested and charged after a prison guard was taken hostage.

The guard was taken hostage at Hobart's Risdon Prison for two hours on Friday by two male inmates armed with makeshift weapons.

The men were charged on Saturday over the incident.

The inmates overpowered the guard and forced him inside a cell in the prison's maximum security section.

A second officer negotiated with the prisoners and was switched for his colleague during the stand-off, which lasted for about two hours.

Further negotiations brought a peaceful end to the incident and police were called in to investigate.

"Minor physical injuries were sustained by both correctional officers," police said in a statement issued on Saturday.

Detectives are continuing to look into how the men, who now face assault charges, managed to arm themselves.
