Private cargo craft heads to space station

An unmanned spacecraft has departed for the International Space Station carrying experiments, provisions and spare parts.

A private spacecraft has basted off for the International Space Station on a resupply mission.

Orbital Sciences' Cygnus spacecraft lifted off on top of an Antares rocket from a NASA site in Virginia and was safely on its way to the orbiting station, US space agency NASA said.

An earlier launch date was put off by the severe cold that gripped the eastern half of the US.

Orbital Sciences is among the private companies sending supplies to the space station.

The unmanned craft is ferrying 1,260kg of supplies including science experiments, provisions and spare parts.
