Bangkok International Airpor has launched an investigation into the suitcase which spontaneously combusted.

The suitcase is believed to have contained a fertilizer bag that ignited while on the airport's luggage conveyor belt.

The suitcase was checked in by a Thai passenger heading to Cambodia via the Bangkok Airways Flight PG 931 from the Bangkok International Airport.

Caretaker Transport Minister Chadchat Suttipunt said the combustion was sparked by phosphorus content that was intended for exhibition in Cambodia. A chemical reaction caused by friction is believed to have started the incident, he said.

"It was fortunate this happened while the suitcase was not yet loaded on the plane. It would have been very dangerous if the fire broke out while the plane was flying," Mr Chadchat said.
