Proctor in frame for Titans NRL captaincy

A raft of injuries to senior players could see Kevin Proctor handed back the Gold Coast captaincy for the Titans' final game of the NRL season on Saturday.

Kevin Proctor could have his leadership credentials reinstated on the Gold Coast after the NRL club's shocking run of injuries to senior players.

The New Zealand representative was fined, suspended and stripped of the co-captaincy in May when caught in a cocaine bust after a Test against Australia.

Injuries have also struck the forward since then but he is likely to pass a concussion test this week and play in the Titans' final game of the season against Sydney Roosters.

It will be up to club officials to decide if he is listed as captain on Tuesday.

But it could be the only option given the club's current state of affairs.

Interim captain Nathan Peats is facing surgery after dislocating his shoulder in Saturday's loss to Canterbury, while regular skipper Ryan James is no certainty to overcome his own shoulder injury.

Accepting an early guilty plea for a shoulder charge, Jarrod Wallace will miss the next three games, to rule him out of contention.

Dale Copley (groin) is also in doubt and Jarryd Hayne is unlikely to be given any extra responsibility after his public spat with axed coach Neil Henry.

That leaves few options for the struggling Titans, with veteran winger William Zillman and versatile forward Joe Greenwood among those standing.

Proctor could get the call-up though, given the club's satisfaction with the Test forward's response to his mid-season incident.

"It'd be good to wear the captain's band, but they will probably give it to an older senior player like Will," Greenwood said on Monday.

"There's still a few (senior players) there, but we all need to be captains on the day."

The 24-year-old has been forced to play a more senior role than expected since moving from Super League club St Helens this year.

"You can't put your finger on how we were so badly hit by injury, but with us losing some senior players some of us younger players have to step up," he said.

Gold Coast have lost six straight games, their last victory coming on July 15 against Cronulla.
