Profile of the key Canning candidates

Canning voters have learnt a fair deal about the Labor and Liberal candidates as they campaigned intensively in the lead-up to Saturday's by-election.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE KEY CANNING CANDIDATES:

Matt Keogh (Labor):

* Grew up in Armadale and Kelmscott in the Canning electorate

* Is a dispute resolution lawyer with Herbert Smith Freehills

* Former president of the Law Society of WA and has worked as a prosecutor in the office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions

* His mother worked as a social worker, retrained as a lawyer and retrained again as a teacher

* Has previously been a youth group leader, a volunteer at St John Ambulance and a board member of Starick, which runs refuges for victims of domestic violence

* Wants Australia to become a republic

* Supports marriage equality and giving MPs a conscience vote

Andrew Hastie (Liberals):

* Born in Wangaratta, Victoria but spent much of his life in NSW

* Father started a church in 1980 and he spent a lot of his youth travelling with his dad around the vast parish, which fell within the federal seat of Indi

* Afghanistan war veteran who led missions against the Taliban. Also fought Islamic State

* Joined the military in 2001 after the September 11 terrorist attacks and was appalled when his own generation blamed the US. Moved to WA in 2010 for SAS training

* Advised the federal government on Operation Sovereign Borders

* On the republican debate: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

* Does not support marriage equality but supports a free vote
