Profit fall for Blackmores

A weak first quarter sales performance has contributed to a fall in half year profit for health products maker Blackmores.

Health products maker Blackmores says sales are improving, particularly in Asia, despite a fall in its half year profit.

The company's profit of $12.1 million in the six months to December 31 was down 11 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

Sales in Australia were down one per cent in the period, but that masked growth in the second quarter of the financial year, the company said.

Sales in Asia grew by 18 per cent, despite political unrest in Thailand.

Chief executive Christine Holgate said full year profit would be broadly in line with the previous year's, although the company was mindful of a volatile local retail environment and the impact on costs of a lower Australian dollar.

Blackmores shares gained 97 cents to $21.49.
