The federal government insists every business making profits in Australia must pay tax consistent with our laws.

Responding to reports global oil giant Shell has generated billions of dollars in revenue but not a cent in company tax, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann argued Australia's anti-avoidance provisions were amongst the most stringent in the world.

The government was pursuing stronger "domestic initiatives" and working through the G20 and OECD on tightening the international system, he told ABC radio.
