Prosecutor wants more jail time for Aussie

Prosecutors are appealing the sentence handed to an Australian over a fatal motorcycle crash in Indonesia, arguing nine months isn't enough.

An Australian jailed over a fatal motorcycle crash in Indonesia could have his sentence increased, with prosecutors to appeal his punishment.

Jake Drage, 23, was last week found guilty of reckless driving causing death and sentenced to nine months; he has already served more than three months in custody.

The West Australian was in West Java on a surfing holiday when his motorcycle collided with another bike, killing its passenger, a local mum.

Drage's lawyer, Michael Hartono, this week said he would not appeal the sentence and instead focus on efforts to get Drage into non-custodial rehabilitation as soon as possible.

But prosecutors, who had argued for 18 months' jail, on Thursday announced they would appeal.

"It's bad news," Mr Hartono told AAP.

"I know this is something unpleasant for the family.

"I haven't met with Jake yet, but his mother has found out.

"She's speechless ... I understand that."

Drage's mother, Tiena Drage, has been in West Java since learning of the June 30 crash, supporting her son through the long ordeal.

Mr Hartono said the appeal would be further anguish.

"But the prosecutor has the right to go to appeal," he said.

"We will keep on defending Jake until it's finished."

Drage has argued the collision was just a freak accident and that there was nothing reckless about his driving.

A legal expert told AAP the appeal to a higher court could take "weeks or months".
