Commonwealth prosecutors are weighing up a brief of evidence regarding the use of a light plane by Pauline Hanson's chief of staff during the 2016 federal election campaign.

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions received the brief concerning James Ashby following an investigation by the Australian Electoral Commission.

"The brief is being assessed in accordance with the prosecution policy of the commonwealth," a CDPP spokeswoman said.

"Until the brief assessment process is complete, we are unable to provide any further information at this stage."

The Jabiru aircraft was bought and registered to Mr Ashby in June 2015, two months after Victorian property developer Bill McNee discussed the idea with the him and the One Nation leader.

Last year Senator Hanson confirmed Mr McNee had "got the plane for James Ashby" and it did not go through the party office as a donation.

In March this year One Nation amended its AEC financial disclosures to declare $30,375 for use of the plane, flown by Mr Ashby.
