Designed to provide a community housing solution for Indigenous Australians, it has now come under fire by members of the community.
The Aboriginal Housing Company began demolition for The Pemulwuy Project in 2004 - a development Aboriginal Housing Company CEO Mr Mundine said is for the benefit of his people.
“We’re here to build a good community for our people, good affordable housing that our children and people can have for the future,” he said.
But not everyone agreed with his aim.
A founding member of the Aboriginal Housing Company is among the many protestors.
“Our community have been concerned for a very long time about the development plans and how Mick is running this Pemulwuy Project,” said protester Jenny Munroe.
It was crucial timing for Miss Munroe, who planned to prolong the housing development scheduled to commence this month.
“The development is supposed to start sometime this month here on The Block so that's why we're here and that’s why we’re digging in. The next four weeks are very crucial,” she said.
But the CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Company is prepared to fight back.
“Who are the people sitting down there? The rest of the community are 100 per cent behind us because they want to see a better future for our children and our people. Do these people want us to go back to the early seventies, back to the vicious cycle? What are they trying to achieve? It’s very sad, it’s very appalling. I’m very disappointed but we are still going on with our project,” said Mr Mundine.
Jenny Munroe is calling on all Australians to join her campaign and submit donations.
