Protests for asylum seeker student in Qld

Brisbane student Mojgan Shamsalipoor was transported to a Darwin detention centre last Friday, and faces deportation.

Brisbane students are protesting the unexplained Darwin detention of their Iranian asylum seeker classmate.

Yeronga State High School student Mojgan Shamsalipoor has not been seen since she was taken from the Brisbane Immigration and Transit Accommodation Centre to Darwin by authorities last Friday.

The Immigration Department has only told various media she was moved for "operational reasons".

More than 300 students, teachers and parents from the school protested against her detention in the Brisbane CBD on Friday afternoon.

Yeronga P&C member Jessica Walker is horrified the 21-year-old is behind bars when she was just three months away from graduating high school.

"She's just a wonderful young person, she gets along with everyone she meets," Ms Walker told AAP.

"Mojgan is such a beautiful giving human.

"This makes us feel absolutely powerless, we just don't understand why this happening."

Ms Shamsalipoor arrived in Australia by boat in 2012 after fleeing sexual abuse and an arranged marriage to man in his 60s in Iran.

Ms Shamsalipoor's asylum claim was rejected last year after she had lived in Australia for two years on a bridging visa.

She is married to Australian resident Milad Jafari, also 21, who claims immigration officials have told her she will be sent back to Iran.
