Public hearing into young people in care

Disability groups are due to give evidence to a parliamentary committee investigating young people with disabilities in residential care.

A parliamentary inquiry into young disabled people in residential care will hear from more than a dozen disability groups on Wednesday.

Several groups and individuals, including Wesley Mission Victoria, MacKillop Family Services and the Summer Foundation, will front the Senate Committee on Community Affairs public hearing in Melbourne.

The committee is investigating the adequacy of residential care arrangements for young people with severe physical, mental or intellectual disabilities in Australia.

MacKillop Family Services submits residential care for young people should be "home-like" and promote social inclusion and community engagement.

The organisation believes the national disability insurance scheme must also fund alternative forms of support and care.
