Public trusts banks the most with privacy

When it comes to safeguarding people's private details, banks are still the most trusted businesses despite their recent mis-steps.

People trust banks more than any other business - at least when it comes to protecting their personal details.

Despite calls for a royal commission and misgivings from politicians and the public over banks' conduct, banking and finance are most trusted when it comes to privacy, according to a survey by financial services provider Deloitte.

Government organisations and the energy sector were next, with real estate ranked the lowest.

The industries that were subject to most regulation attracted the most trust, said Tommy Viljoen, Deloitte national lead partner for cyber risk services.

"Communicating how information is used and shared builds trust," Mr Viljoen said.

"Consumers are telling us they want more knowledge so they can make informed decisions."

Mr Viljoen said 71 per cent of consumers said security breaches didn't affect the level of trust they placed in a business so long as they were informed.

Mobile apps that tell users what it does with their personal information and sites with shorter-lived cookies also helped build trust, Deloitte's Trust Without Borders report said.

The survey asked more than 1,000 people to rank how they perceive the privacy practices of 116 well-known brands from 13 sectors that also included telecommunications, media, health and higher education.

Respondents gauged organisations based on their security measures, transparency and the way personal details are collected and used.

The report, which included an analysis of mobile applications, found the majority of information went overseas, mainly to the US.

1. Banking & finance

2. Government

3. Energy

4. Insurance

5. Telecommunications

6. Higher education

7. Technology

8. Travel & Transport
