The Philadelphia Eagles have cut Australian punter Brad Wing from their NFL squad.

The 22-year-old from Melbourne was in a head-to-head competition with NFL veteran Donnie Jones during the Eagles' pre-season, with the victor to be named the team's punter.

Wing missed out on Sunday when head coach Chip Kelly announced the names of 10 players cut as Philadelphia trimmed its roster.

Wing's axing was not a surprise.

Loaded with talent and a record-breaking career at Louisiana State University, it was Wing's off-field antics that damaged his pursuit of a career in the NFL.

NFL clubs opted not to select him at this year's draft after he earned a "bad boy" tag at LSU for a 2011 arrest and was suspended before LSU's final game last year for an undisclosed reason.

The Eagles snapped him up as a free agent as soon as the draft was over, but Wing again hurt his chances by failing a basic fitness test early in the Eagles training camp.

"We're talking about passing a minimum standard here, we're not talking about qualifying for the US Olympic team," Kelly said at the time.

Wing will be hoping for a lifeline from another NFL club.

The NFL season begins September 5.
