Putin pays out $1.4m to Russian medallists

It's only day two of Sochi's nine-day Paralympics, but Russia's athletes have already been awarded $1.4 million in cash for winning medals.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has already paid out $1.4 million in cash prizes to the country's Paralympians who have won medals at the Sochi Games.

In the same way Olympians were paid a bounty for their successes in February's Games, Russia's disabled athletes are also sitting pretty.

Paralympians receive four million roubels (AU$121,400) if they win a gold medal.

If they secure a silver they get 2.5 million roubels (AU$75,900), while a bronze is worth 1.7 million (AU$51,600).

By the close of day two, Russia had already claimed 17 medals - five gold, seven silver and five bronze.

It makes for a staggering 46 million roubels (AU$1.4 million) in cash prizes.

Russia is in with a strong chance to win more medals in Sochi, with seven days still to go and a team of 69 athletes entered across all events.
